The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has levied Rs 4,000 crore Environment Compensation on Bihar for its failure to scientifically manage the liquid and solid waste in violation of law.

The National Green Tribunal has imposed a penalty of Rs 3,500 crore on the West Bengal government for the huge gap in solid and liquid waste generation and treatment.

Noting that only 1.1 lakh of the 2.7 lakh healthcare facilities identified across the country are authorised under the biomedical waste management rules, the National Green Tribunal on Tuesday said serious efforts should be made to bridge this gap to avoid environmental hazards arising out of handling of COVID-19 disease.

Amazon and Flipkart need to fulfil their extended producer responsibility under the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016 and need to establish a system for collecting back the plastic waste generated due to the packaging of their products, the Central Pollution Control Board told the NGT on Tuesday.

There is a huge gap in generation and treatment of waste which is endangering the environment and adversely affecting public health, the National Green Tribunal has said while directing that continued failure will result in liability of every local body to pay penalty of Rs 10 lakh per month for the population of above 10 lakh.
