Jihadists in Egypt's Sinai killed 15 soldiers and two civilians in attacks on checkpoints on today, security officials said, the deadliest in months despite a massive army campaign against the insurgents.

They came in their thousands, bussed in across the desert from thousands of kilometres down the Nile, marching into the square with toddlers on their shoulders, insisting they were prepared to die.
