Twenty states and Union territories have so far joined a pan-India network of single emergency helpline number ''112'' on which immediate assistance can be sought by anyone in distress, officials said Friday.

With the national capital witnessing a rise in crimes against women, the Delhi government is revamping the women's distress helpline 181, which was set up after the December 16 gang rape incident.

The 24-hour 'Nirbhaya' helpline for women in the capital, launched shortly after a fatal gang rape in December 2012 sparked nationwide protests, is at risk of closing due to a lack of funds and political upheaval, its chief said on Tuesday.

The 181 "Nirbhaya" helpline set up by the Delhi government in the aftermath of the fatal gang-rape of a young medical student in December, 2012, is on the verge of being disconnected.
