The national capital of Delhi has been awarded for having the best non-motorised transport system in the form of a 1.4-km long corridor for motor-free traffic in the congested Chandni Chowk in the Walled City area.

"Life is becoming hell" in cities due to private vehicles, Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu said today, adding every city should shift focus to non-motorised modes of transport such as cycling.

Surat has been adjudged as the best in Integrated Mass Transit, while Dharwad-Hubli (Karnataka) has the best city bus service, the Union Urban Development Ministry on Thursday said as it announced the names of cities for their commendable initiatives towards promotion of public transport, non-motorised transport and road safety.

Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari was greeted with loud cheers at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan yesterday when he assured that battery-operated rickshaws, or e-rickshaws, will not be barred from operating in the national capital and they will be considered as non-motorised vehicles.

In a relief to e-rickshaw operators in New Delhi, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari today announced that the battery-operated rickshaws will not be barred from operating in the national capital and they will be considered as non-motorised vehicles.

A fresh notification prohibiting cycles and other forms of non-motorised transport along 174 major thoroughfares of the city has been issued by the Kolkata Police.
