Karnataka Water Resources Minister and senior Congress leader DK Shivakumar, on Wednesday, termed the call for Thursday's north Karnataka bandh as a "BJP sponsored" protest. He alleged that the BJP was backing various outfits demanding separate statehood for the region.

North Karnataka has long been considered a less developed part of the state compared to the more prosperous southern parts. And the issue is gathering steam with a bandh called for this Thursday, August 2, to highlight what protestors says is the neglect of this region. There is even a demand for a second capital for the state from the north.

Farmer groups in north Karnataka have called for a bandh tomorrow demanding the implementation of the Kalasa-Banduri project. This project would involve diverting water of the Mahadayi river from its two tributaries, Kalasa and Banduri in some of the northern districts of the state.

An all-Karnataka bandh was called on Saturday in favour of the Kalasa Banduri drinking water project for north Karnataka. Schools were closed in different districts across the state, and public transport was off the road in Bengaluru and other cities.

Dharwad, in north Karnataka, has now been chosen as the site for a new IIT. But instead of celebrations, there have been protests - with even a bandh called in Dharwad on Wednesday.
