North Korea has opened a new internet connection with the outside world, this time via Russia, a move which cybersecurity experts say would strengthen the country's internet and its ability to conduct cyberattacks.

Dyn Research said North Korea's online connection went offline at 1541 GMT and was restored just over an hour later.

If someone did just knock North Korea off the Internet for half a day, it wouldn't have taken much. With barely 1,000 Internet addresses, one Internet service provider and one connection to the outside world via China, North Korea's cyberlinks are negligible - barely one percent of that of Afghanistan.

The United States urged North Korea on Monday to admit it ordered a cyberattack on the Hollywood studio Sony Pictures and to pay for the damage it had caused.

Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt said on Thursday it's up to North Korea to shed its self-imposed isolation and allow its citizens to use the Internet and connect with the outside world, or risk remaining way behind other countries.
