A man was killed by a polar bear in the Norwegian Arctic Svalbard islands early on Friday, local authorities said, the first such deadly incident in nine years.

Just 21 days after leaving the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen, an arctic fox had arrived in Greenland. And in less than three months, she made it to Canada. She averaged nearly 30 miles a day - some days, though, she walked almost 100.

The Norwegian Arctic islands of Svalbard are discouraging last-minute visitors for a rare solar eclipse next week, warning that hotels are full, it will be freezing cold and polar bears are on the prowl.

India is all set to expand its engagement in the Arctic. External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid, who on Wednesday visited the remote island of Ny Alesund with his Norwegian counterpart, Espen Barth Eide, announced that India is in the process of increasing its presence in the Arctic and at "Himadri", India's research lab located here.
