Describing as a "worrisome trend" the "rising" cases of fraudulent marriages between NRIs and Indian citizens, the Law Commission has recommended a comprehensive law to deal with the situation and compulsory registration of such alliances.

The approved amendments include revocation of passports of NRIs if marriage is not registered in seven days.

All NRI marriages solemnised in India would need to be registered within seven days else their passports and visas would not be issued, the Ministry of Women and Child Development said today.

In order to create a stronger deterrent for NRIs who have abandon their wives in India, the Ministry of External Affairs will now display the summons to such men on their official website, an official said on Wednesday.
