GAAR panel extends scope to include all NRI tax payers

Expanding the scope of the general anti-avoidance rules (GAAR), the Prime Minister-appointed panel, headed by Parthasarathi Shome on Saturday recommended including all Non-resident taxpayers into the ambit of the rules. The rules were initially applicable only to foreign institutional investors (FIIs).

The standing committee on finance, headed by Yashwant Sinha and comprising other members of Parliament, has submitted their report on the Direct Tax Code or DTC Bill to the Parliament on Friday. The report recommends, among other things, an increase in the personal income tax limit to Rs 3 lakh from Rs 1.8 lakh currently.
