Nuclear Scientist Sekhar Basu

Veteran nuclear scientist and former chairman of Atomic Energy Commission Dr Sekhar Basu died of COVID-19 this morning at a private hospital in Kolkata, a health department official said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday condoled the death of noted atomic scientist Sekhar Basu, and said he played a key role in establishing India as a lead country in nuclear science and engineering.

President Ram Nath Kovind expressed his condolences to the family and friends of Dr Sekhar Basu, former Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and Nuclear Scientist, who passed away on Thursday.

Veteran atomic scientist Dr Sekhar Basu has been appointed as India's new nuclear chief. 63-year-old Dr Basu, the man who pioneered the highly complex nuclear reactor for India's first nuclear-powered submarine INS Arihant, is the new Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission.
