Authorities in Odisha's Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts have launched a massive evacuation drive in low-lying areas, officials said Sunday, as water in Subarnarekha and Baitarani breached the danger mark.

The flood situation in Odisha's Mahanadi river system remained grim as it continues to swell, with around 1.5 lakh people in 237 villages being marooned, a senior official said on Wednesday.

Several people have been evacuated from low-lying areas in parts of Odisha's Malkangiri district, which are reeling under floods as backwaters from river Godavari.

Odisha government evacuated about 6,000 people after an embankment of Brahmani river in Jajpur district breached, while rescue operation was also on in Dhenkanal and Kendrapara districts where fresh areas were inundated.

With flood situation in northern Odisha districts turning grim, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today asked officials to evacuate people to safe places and send ODRAF personnel to affected areas for rescue operation.

With several Odisha rivers flowing above danger marks due to incessant downpour, the state government has stepped up rescue operations evacuating 17,000 people even as 23 people have died so far in rain and flood-related incidents.
