Omicron Subvariants

Scientists have warned that a "more contagious" variant of Covid-19, dubbed XEC, is spreading more rapidly across Europe and could soon become the dominant strain.

India has logged 10,158 fresh Covid-19 cases over the past 24 hours. It is believed that the Omicron subvariant, XBB.1.16 is driving the latest surge in the country.

The omicron subvariant XBB.1.16 is the main cause of the surge. According to the WHO, the subvariant and its spread in India are being monitored.

The Union Health Ministry said on Thursday that the XBB.1.16 subvariant of Omicron might be the dominant virus strain in the country but there has been no reported increase in the rate of hospitalisation or death so far.

The Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5, the most transmissible Covid-19 subvariant so far, is spreading quickly across the United States and was predicted on Friday to become Europe's dominant strain in a matter of weeks.

The United States on Wednesday said that the restrictions imposed on flyers from China are because of the "lack of adequate and transparent" data from Beijing over the omicron subvariants that has the potential to spread beyond its borders.
