Scientists have warned that a "more contagious" variant of Covid-19, dubbed XEC, is spreading more rapidly across Europe and could soon become the dominant strain.

India has logged 10,158 fresh Covid-19 cases over the past 24 hours. It is believed that the Omicron subvariant, XBB.1.16 is driving the latest surge in the country.

Amid a spurt in fresh Covid infections, 234 cases of XBB1.16.1 mutated sub-variant have been found in the country, according to INSACOG data.

The new Covid-19 variant, XBB.1.16 is responsible for the surge in cases in India. According to the Health Ministry data, India has reported a total of 5,880 covid cases in the last 24 hours.

Symptoms of this variant include fever that gradually climbs and lasts for 1-2 days, sore throat, bodily soreness, headaches and abdominal discomfort.

Fever, sore throat, body pain, headaches and abdominal discomfort are some of the symptoms of the XBB.1.16 variant.

Rats collected in the study tested positive for alpha, delta and omicron variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
