Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday inaugurated an online facility for passport verification -- mPassport Seva -- and dedicated the mobile forensic vehicles inducted into the Delhi Police to people.

The interview vetting, on top of other risk-screening performed by Amazon, has been piloted with more than 1,000 merchant applicants based in China, the United States, United Kingdom, and Japan, Amazon said.

No police verification is required for reissue of passports, the government said today. "For reissue of passports, police verification is not required, provided the first passport had been issued on the basis of clear police report," Minister of State for External Affairs VK Singh told Lok Sabha in a written reply.

The project will be launched in Bengaluru as Karnataka has a robust police database called Police IT.

Bengaluru will become the first city to have online police verification process for passports with its launch in November as part of a country-wide project that will cut down the time required for issuing the travel document from a month at present to just a week.
