A doctor and two nurses of MDM Hospital in Rajasthan's Jodhpur were removed from duty today, a day after a cancer patient died due to a disruption in the supply of oxygen caused by a power shutdown in the trauma centre of the state-run facility.

After several incidents of people facing breathing problems at high altitudes, the Sikkim government has made it mandatory for all vehicles registered in the state to carry oxygen supply kits or canisters from July 1.

It appealed to the government to upscale the preparedness "for any such situation as seen in 2021" by issuing necessary instructions to the concerned Ministries and Departments to make available the emergency medicines, oxygen supply, and ambulances.

The petitioners, who were studying in Class 7 and Class 2 at the time of filing of the petition last year, have claimed before the court that their 41-year-old father died in the second wave of the pandemic due to lack of oxygen supply to the Jaipur Golden Hospital here.

A 64-year-old patient died at a hospital in Delhi's Rohini area in the early hours of the morning today after his oxygen support was disrupted due to a fire at the facility, officials said.

Noting the "significant surge" in COVID-19 cases in the country, the Centre on Wednesday wrote to all states and UTs urging them to direct departments concerned to ensure adequate buffer stock of medical oxygen for at least 48 hours.

Uninterrupted supply of medical oxygen in sufficient quantity is of critical importance to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic, the Centre said on Wednesday, urging states and UTs to conduct mock drills to ensure full functionality of all oxygen equipment.

The Health Minister has asked opposition parties to stop playing politics over oxygen shortage during the 2nd wave of COVID-19 infections and take note of the Centre's efforts to ramp production of oxygen to meet the surge in demand.
