Dubai's Emirates Airlines has banned passengers from carrying pagers and walkie-talkies on its flights, following last month's attacks on Lebanese group Hezbollah involving communication devices that exploded.

The lethal hack of Hezbollah's Asian-branded pagers and walkie-talkies has sparked an intense search for the devices' path, revealing a murky market for older technologies where buyers may have few assurances about what they are getting.

Hezbollah was handing its members new Gold Apollo branded pagers hours before thousands blew up this week, two security sources said, indicating they were confident the devices were safe despite an ongoing sweep of electronic kit to identify threats.

Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah has acknowledged that his powerful group had suffered an "unprecedented" blow when thousands of operatives' communication devices exploded in attacks it blamed on Israel.

Since Hezbollah has reduced the use of mobile phones by its forces because Israel can easily detect and target them, pagers have increasingly become the preferred messaging device within the group.

In the second wave of device explosions in as many days, 20 people died and more than 450 were wounded on Wednesday in Hezbollah strongholds in Lebanon.

The attack targeted Hezbollah operatives by planting explosive devices inside hand-held pagers and walkie-talkies. 

Thousands of pagers and walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah members detonated across Lebanon on Tuesday and Wednesday, killing at least 32 people and injuring thousands more.

Twin attacks using communication devices, suspected to have an Israeli hand, have struck fear in the ranks of Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group based in Lebanon.

Among those wounded in the pager attacks on Tuesday was Iran's ambassador to Lebanon Mojtaba Amani, with Iranian media reporting he suffered injuries "to the hand and the face."

A pager or ‘beeper’ is a small, portable communication device that receives short messages, typically numeric or alphanumeric, over a radio frequency signal.
