Pakistan China Nuclear Ties

Pakistan is "indebted" to its all-weather ally China for its "unflinching support" to Islamabad on the Kashmir issue, the expansion of the Nuclear Suppliers Group and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa has said.

Expressing concern over latest reports suggesting that China supplied nuclear weapons technology and design to Pakistan, two influential US lawmakers have written a letter to the Obama administration, seeking to know what has been done to halt such cooperation which represents a threat to the national security of America and its allies.

China has committed $6.5 billion to finance the construction of a major nuclear power project in Pakistan's port city of Karachi as it seeks to strengthen ties with its strategic partner, Pakistani officials said.

Western states pressured China at closed-door talks last week to address concerns about its plans to expand a nuclear power plant in Pakistan and provide more information, but were rebuffed, two diplomatic sources said on Wednesday.
