Pakistan Tax Evasion

The Income Tax Department on Wednesday conducted raids against three "prominent" businessmen based in Srinagar and Kupwara in Jammu and Kashmir on charges of tax evasion linked to the cross-border trade with Pakistan, which was suspended by India last year, officials said.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz on Saturday threatened to reject the findings of a joint investigation team (JIT) probing Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's family for tax evasion, threatening to push the country's politics against a precipice.

At least 150 Pakistani nationals, including the son of a former minister and an ex-lawmaker of fundamentalist Jamaat-e-Islami party, were among the people owning offshore firms in the Carribean tax haven of Bahamas, according to new set of data published on Thursday.

Pakistan's Federal Bureau of Revenue (FBR) also froze the bank account of another Test player Azhar Ali for the same reason. A source close to Misbah-ul-Haq said that the action taken by the FBR would be challenged as there was a dispute over amount of dues that the cricketer owed to the tax authorities.
