Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking his personal intervention for release of four Indian fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan navy, besides release of 103 boats.

With over 80 Indian fishermen languishing in Sri Lankan prisons, Tamil Nadu government has once again sought Central intervention for their release.

Four fishermen from Rameswaram were taken into custody by Sri Lanka navy while fishing near Katchatheevu in the third instance of such action this month by the island country.

The fishermen who planned a series of agitations demanding the authorities for steps for the release of their counterparts and boats, arrested by Sri Lankan Navy from yesterday, withdrew their protests after Union minister of state Pon Radhakrishnan invited them for talks on August 14 at Chennai.

Intensifying their five-day old indefinite boycott of fishing pressing for safety and security in traditional areas in the Palk Bay, fishermen of this district today held a demonstration in front of the Collectorate in Ramanathapuram.

Sri Lanka's Foreign Affairs Minister, G L Peiris, is in India on a three-day visit. Today, he met External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj over lunch where Mr Peiris reiterated president Rajapakse's invitation to PM Modi to visit India.

In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh yesterday, she referred to the arrest of 19 Tamil Nadu fishermen two days back and said she was at a "loss of words to convey my deep anguish over the repeated apprehension and incarceration" of a large number of fishermen."
