After the removal of airfare caps, there seems to be a mixed trend with lower ticket prices for routes having relatively lesser passenger loads, according to travel industry experts.

Virgin Atlantic cancelled its Delhi-London flight on Thursday and British Airways will also pull out a few India-London flights from its summer schedule following Heathrow airport's decision to limit the number of passengers to one lakh a day.

London's Heathrow said it would cap the number of departing passengers at 100,000 a day this summer to try to limit traveller disruption as it struggles to cope with a rebound in demand.

Following a dip in the COVID-19 cases in the country, the Ministry of Civil Aviation on Saturday increased the passenger capacity on domestic flights from 72.5 per cent to 85 per cent.

Passengers will have to spend more money for air travel from now as the Civil Aviation Ministry on Thursday increased the lower and upper limits on domestic airfares by 10 to 30 per cent.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation stated that it has been monitoring the traffic every day, and that the air traffic is expected to further pick up because of the festive season. As the passenger traffic increases, the upper cap would be revised to 70-75 per cent of normal capacity in the coming days.

The government has also proposed stricter safety checks for drivers and wants to cap their working hours at 12 per day, amid fears long shifts were putting passenger safety at risk.

Indian Railways has increased the monthly cap on tickets booked on the ICRTC portal from six to 12 for Aadhaar-verified passengers, officials said.
