The Supreme Court on Monday restrained the Centre and Navy from releasing from services some officers (both male and female), who were not granted a permanent commission and sought reply from the Centre.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked principal bench of Armed Force Tribunal to adjudicate the pleas of Navy officers, who have challenged rejection of their claim for Permanent Commission (PC) and grant of pensionary benefits.

The Supreme Court today stayed the release of ten women naval officers, who are seeking grant of permanent commission (PC), from the services as scheduled on December 31 this year.

The Supreme Court Tuesday restrained the Centre from discharging the Short Service Commissioner (SSC) women officers in Indian Navy from service pending consideration of their claims for grant of Permanent Commission (PC).

The Supreme Court has cleared permanent commission for women in Navy, saying men and women officers should be treated equally. "They can sail with same efficiency as male officers," the top court said.

Decks have been cleared for women officers to be accepted on permanent commission in the Indian Navy - enabling them to serve on board warships and join as pilots of maritime reconnaissance aircraft.

Women can now be a part of the Indian Navy till they retire. The Delhi High Court today allowed women to get permanent commission in the navy. The court said it would "frown upon any endeavor to block progress of women."
