Eight men in Gujarat drank pesticide during a protest in Gujarat calling for the cow to be declared "rashtra mata" (mother of the nation). One of the men has died, the police said. Three are reported in critical condition in hospital.

Those in favour of BT brinjal say, the use of pesticides and costs will go down and the yield will increase and with it will increase the incomes of the farmers. But the protesters are arguing that Bt brinjal has a gene added to it that makes it poisonous for pests and it may harm humans as well.
