Google Pay, PhonePe Other Payment Firms Seek to Join RBI's CBDC Pilot, Said to Offer eRupee Transactions

Google SoundPod is coming to merchants in India in the coming months, the company said on Thursday. After a year-long limited pilot, the company revealed that it is bringing its device for payment alerts to merchants in the country, along with cashback offers. Google's SoundPod will compete with soundboxes from rivals like PhonePe and Paytm.

Google has announced its third-party in-app billing pilot project to India and four other markets. This would allow developers to use a third-party payment system in its Android app alongside Google Play's billing system. Developers are required to pay a service fee and it will get reduced by 4 percent when an alternate system is used by consumers.

People will be able to use their e-CNY tokens to pay for food, clothing, housing, and transportation.
