Police Crackdown On Baba Ramdev

Yoga guru Ramdev on Sunday announced a fresh agitation against black money and corruption with a one-day dharna at New Delhi on June 3, marking the first anniversary of police crackdown on Ramlila grounds.

Coming down heavily on the government and Delhi Police, the Supreme Court on Thursday ordered prosecution of police personnel involved in the midnight crackdown on yoga guru Baba Ramdev and his supporters in June last year.

The Supreme Court has pulled up both the police and Baba Ramdev for the midnight chaos in June last year at the Yoga teacher's rally at Delhi's Ramlila grounds, which ended in a police crackdown on his followers and the death of one.

Against the backdrop of the Supreme Court slamming the Delhi Police for its midnight crackdown against supporters of Ramdev, the BJP has held Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union ministers P Chidambaram and Kapil Sibal "accountable" for the incident.

Pronouncing its order on Delhi Police's midnight crackdown on yoga guru Baba Ramdev's camp in New Delhi, the Supreme Court today rapped the State and the Delhi Police on its knuckles in what it termed as a case of "police excess". The court also held the yoga guru guilty of negligence.
