Polio Vaccine Campaign: The first Sub-National Immunization Day for 2022 for administering polio vaccine drops is being conducted from June 19 in 11 states and UTs.

India has decided to vaccinate Afghanistan returnees against polio for free as a preventive measure against the wild polio virus, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Sunday.

Around 89 lakh children under the age of five, as per provisional data, were given polio drops across the country on Sunday on the occasion of Polio National Immunization Day, also known as "Polio Ravivar", the Union health ministry said.

India remains polio free and there is no need to panic about the Vaccine Derived Polio Virus (VDPV) detected in Hyderabad earlier this month, Union Health Minister J P Nadda said on Thursday.

India continues to be polio free, the government said in a statement released after a strain of the virus was found in samples of sewage water in Hyderabad. The strain found is a vaccine derived poliovirus or VDPV.

India's first injectible inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) was today launched by Health Minister JP Nadda as part of the country's commitment to global polio eradication.

While India has been polio-free since last year, it should be on the guard against importing the wild poliovirus from neighbouring Pakistan, says Dr Thomas Frieden, head of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"India remains polio free for the fourth consecutive year," the Health Ministry said refuting reports that around 200 samples have tested positive to polio-like symptoms in Uttar Pradesh and asserted that its test has found all these cases negative.

An Indian organisation, specialising in prosthetic legs, will supply artificial limbs free of cost to 1,000 physically challenged Afghan nationals in the war-torn country.

India was today officially declared 'Polio Free' by the World Health Organisation.

The last polio victim, Rukhsar, was detected at a remote village in West Bengal's Howrah district three years ago.

India will be free from polio in the next three years, said Health Minister on Tuesday.
