Around 100 migratory birds have been found dead in Pong Dam Lake in the last two weeks after the outbreak of a second wave of bird flu in Himachal Pradesh, wildlife officials said today.

Around 1,700 migratory birds, most of them bar-headed geese, have been found dead under mysterious circumstances in and around Himachal Pradesh's Pong Dam lake In Kangra district, prompting the authorities to suspend tourism in the area.

The water levels in Himachal Pradesh's major dams -- Bhakra and Pong -- have increased comfortably with the monsoon active in the region, an official said today.

As many as 12,314 birds of various species were found during the day-long summer bird count exercise at Pong Dam, to monitor the number of birds present in the Wildlife Sanctuary.

The water levels in the Bhakra and Pong dams in Himachal Pradesh have dipped alarmingly low owing to the deficient monsoon in the region, an official said on Saturday.

Water in the Bhakhra Dam reservoir - the life line of canals in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan - has touched a new low. With rainfall in the hills of Himachal 50 per cent below normal, both Bhakhra and Pong dams are depleted.
