Prashant Bhushan Contempt Plea

Activist-lawyer Prashant Bhushan approached the Supreme Court today seeking review of the August 31 sentencing order to either pay nominal fine of Re 1 or face a three-month jail term and debarment from law practice for three years in the contempt case for his two tweets against the judiciary.

Kapil Sibal, the Congress leader, came out in defence of Prashant Bhushan, tweeting that "contempt power (is) being used (by the courts) as a sledgehammer" and warning that history would judge the courts for "having let us down"

The Supreme Court today allowed former Union minister Arun Shourie, veteran journalist N Ram and activist-lawyer Prashant Bhushan to withdraw their plea challenging the constitutional validity of a legal provision dealing with criminal contempt.

A day after the Supreme Court reserved its verdict, activist lawyer Prashant Bhushan Thursday moved a plea seeking to present additional evidence if the court is not satisfied with his submissions that the contempt was not made out against him for his two tweets allegedly against judiciary.

The government's top lawyer, KK Venugopal, today withdrew his contempt petition against senior Supreme Court advocate, Prashant Bhushan, for his tweets allegedly criticising the court on the appointment of M Nageswara Rao as interim CBI director.
