Pregnant Women In Zika Areas

US researchers announced plans Tuesday to conduct a vast study on health risks faced by pregnant women in areas where Zika virus is prevalent, particularly in Latin America.

The World Health Organization is advising women living in areas where the Zika virus is being transmitted to delay getting pregnant, advice already given by several countries where the virus is in widespread transmission.

In view of the outbreak of Zika virus, the government has issued a travel advisory urging pregnant women to defer or cancel their travel to the affected areas, Rajya Sabha was informed today.

Possible Zika vaccines are at least 18 months away from large-scale trials, the World Health Organization said Friday, while advising pregnant women to consider delaying travel to areas where the mosquito-borne virus has turned up amid concerns it may be linked to abnormally small heads in newborn children.

The World Health Organisation advised women on Wednesday on how to protect themselves from Zika, particularly if pregnant, but also reassured them that most women in areas affected by the mosquito-borne virus will give birth to "normal infants."
