"Cops Wanted Revenge": UP Activist Arrested For Citizenship Clashes Gets Bail

A noted theatre artiste arrested by the Lucknow police last month amid Citizenship Amendment Act protests walked out of prison on bail this morning. Deepak Kabir, who was taken into custody after he went to a police station to enquire about his detained friends, has been charged with rioting and attempted murder.

In Karnataka, a theatre director based in Mysuru has been working with prisoners serving life sentences for the past 17 years. Part of the convicts' repertoire in dramatics is Maaranayaka, a Kannada adaptation of Shakespeare's famous play, Macbeth.

A tailor by profession, A K Hangal was an active participant in the freedom struggle and spent three years in prison in his native Pakistan. Moving to Mumbai soon after Partition, he joined Indian People's Theatre Association along with Balraj Sahni and Kaifi Azmi.
