A large number of police personnel are deployed in two coastal villages of Puducherry after clashes between fishermen led to police opening fire in the air twice to bring the situation under control on Saturday.

The bitter back-and-forth over the crucial question of a "fisheries ministry" continued Sunday, with Home Minister Amit Shah the latest BJP leader to take on Congress MP Rahul Gandhi over last week's remark about fishermen needing a separate ministry.

Ten Tamil Nadu fishermen were today arrested and their boats impounded by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly fishing in their territorial waters.
