Punjab Msp Payments

The Punjab government paid Rs 5,334 crore to over 1.8 lakh farmers under the minimum support price, or MSP, guarantee in a single day on Friday, the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Bhagwant Mann government said in a statement today.

This is the first time that Punjab farmers have started receiving payments directly into their bank accounts against sale of their wheat crop.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has opposed the Centre's scheme to make a direct online payment of the MSP to farmers' bank accounts, bypassing arhtiyas (commission agents), for the crops to be procured by the government from the next Rabi season.

Farmers in Punjab are still waiting for compensation promised by the Centre during procurement of wheat by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and state government agencies.
