The Meghalaya government assured a Punjab government delegation on Thursday that it was "duty-bound" to protect the people of all communities living in the state.

A week after militant group HNLC issued a threat to Punjabi settlers asking them to vacate the Punjabi Lane area of Shillong, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has sent a four-member delegation to the hill state to work out a solution.

The authorities have clamped prohibitory orders in Punjabi Lane area in Shillong and served notices to its residents directing them to furnish documents within a month to prove that they had settled in the area legally.

The situation in Shillong showed signs of improvement for the second day today even as Meghalaya Governor Ganga Prasad asked the people to help maintain peace in the state.

88-year-old Darshan Singh, a retired employee of the Shillong Municipal Corporation, hasn't slept a wink for the last five days. Mr Singh was born in Shillong after his father had migrated from Gurdaspur in Punjab during the British Raj in search of job. Now, he can't understand why he is being called an "outsider".
