Railways Elephant Deaths

The introduction of an AI-based surveillance mechanism in 11 elephant corridors in the northeast has helped eliminate elephant deaths due to train collisions there and the Northeast Frontier Railway now plans to introduce it across the zone.

The East Coast of Railway (ECOR) is all set to install Intrusion Detection System (IDS) in elephant movement areas in order to prevent deaths due to train accidents, an official said.

Despite rigorous efforts by Indian Railways to prevent the elephant deaths due to railway accidents, a pregnant elephant was hit by a goods train in the Chapramari Reserve forest in Alipurduar district of West Bengal early this morning.

A female elephant was killed after being hit by a goods train in Odisha's Keonjhar district, Forest officials said today. The incident took place at around 9.55 pm yesterday night when a herd of 10 elephants were crossing the railway tracks near Ramachandrapur village and the empty goods train was heading towards Nayagarh from Jakhapura.

Five adult elephants and a calf were crushed to death last night by a train in Assam. The elephants were hit by the Guwahati-Naharlagun Express at around 1 am when the herd was trying to cross the rail line, sources in the railways said.

Three elephants were run over by a goods train in March this year in Deepor Beel in Assam. In the last five years across the country, more than 60 elephants have been run over by trains.But last Thursday's Jalpaiguri tragedy in which seven elephants died after being hit by a train is one of the worst cases.
