A gangster linked to dozens of murders escaped from police custody in Delhi after apparently serving food laced with sedatives to officers guarding him.

From patrolling the streets to keeping a tab on drunken driving till the wee hours of the night, Delhi Police personnel spent Diwali shouldering added responsibilities even as the city celebrated. And they weren't complaining - although some did wish that people would be a little more considerate.

A 26-year-old man on Thursday cooked up a story of being robbed by four bike-borne men who also set fire to his car to make a fake insurance claim, police said. Manoj alleged that four assailants came on bike, waylaid him and tried to rob him in Narela on the outskirts of Delhi. They set the car on fire when he resisted, police said.
