The Railways has generated more than 8 lakh man-days of work in six states, including Bihar and Rajasthan, under a rural public works scheme launched in June this year to tackle the impact of COVID-19 on migrant workers, the ministry said on Tuesday.

A 50-year-old migrant worker died on-board a Shramik Special train from Rajasthan to West Bengal, triggering panic among other passengers who travelled with the body for more than eight hours, police said on Sunday.

Over 1.38 lakh migrant workers stranded in Rajasthan have been sent to their home states in 98 Shramik Special trains till Sunday, the North Western Railway said on Monday.

Political parties in Uttar Pradesh today accused the Congress and its government in Rajasthan of double standards over buses for migrant workers as the UP government cleared a Rs 36 lakh bill sent by Rajasthan for sending back UP students stranded in Kota.

A Rajasthan minister on Sunday claimed that hisstate government had kept 500 private buses ready to ferry migrant workers to Uttar Pradesh but they were not allowed to enter by the Yogi Adityanath government.

"Windows of hope," read the caption of a picture tweeted today by Union Railways Minister Piyush Goyal. The picture had several migrant workers, bound for Jodhpur in Rajasthan, waving their hands from the windows of a "shramik (worker)" special train, chugging off from Hubbali railway station in Karnataka.

The temperature in Rajasthan worked its way up to 37 degrees celsius today, infiltrating the already arduous journey of migrant workers in the state who are walking home to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Hundreds of migrant workers trying to walk home to Uttar Pradesh from places like Delhi, Gurgaon and Rajasthan were stopped by the police in west UP's Firozabad earlier this morning , leading to chaos and confusion.
