Following the reduction of central excise duty a few states have now additionally announced a reduction of VAT (Value Added Tax) on petrol and diesel, namely Maharashtra, Kerala, and Rajasthan.

The Rajasthan government on Saturday reduced value-added tax (VAT) on petrol by Rs 2.48 per litre and diesel by Rs 1.16 per litre, following the reduction of excise duty by the Centre.

As PM Narendra Modi flagged higher fuel prices in many opposition-ruled states including Rajasthan, CM Ashok Gehlot said the PM "by mistake instead of saying Bhopal, mentioned Jaipur" as petrol and diesel cost more in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh.

Rajasthan minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas on Monday asked the BJP to distribute coupons for petrol, diesel and LPG just like they "distributed" tickets for the movie "The Kashmir Files".

Rajasthan on Tuesday night reduced VAT on fuel prices, making petrol cheaper by Rs 4 per litre and diesel by Rs 5 per litre. The revised prices come into effect from midnight, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot tweeted.

For the first time, diesel price in Rajasthan's Sri Ganganagar has breached Rs. 100 per litre mark, retailing at Rs. 100.05 per litre. Petrol, on other hand, costs more than Rs 107 a litre.

Petrol is retailing above the Rs 100 per litre mark in six states including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
