Congress leader Karti Chidambaram on Wednesday hit out at superstar Rajinikanth over his comments on Tamil icon Periyar, saying that he should instead speak about the Citizenship Amendment Act protests and violence at Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Tamil Nadu's opposition DMK has advised actor-politician Rajinikanth to rethink his comment on Tamil icon Periyar Ramasamy, which has generated huge controversy. Rajinikanth has refused to apologise for his comment, which has been seen by many as denigrating the 19th Century social activist, who is considered the father of the "Dravidian movement".

Superstar Rajinikanth today said he would not apologise for his comments on social reformer EV Ramasamy "Periyar", over which a police complaint has been filed by a political group. Accused of "defaming" Periyar in the complaint, Rajinikanth said his comments were based on news reports he had read.
