Ramdev Camp Crackdown

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev has been once again told by the Supreme Court that he has to take responsibility along with the government for the chaos that erupted at his camp in Delhi in June last year.

The BJP says it will make the crackdown on Baba Ramdev and his followers in June last year an election issue.

Against the backdrop of the Supreme Court slamming the Delhi Police for its midnight crackdown against supporters of Ramdev, the BJP has held Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union ministers P Chidambaram and Kapil Sibal "accountable" for the incident.

Pronouncing its order on Delhi Police's midnight crackdown on yoga guru Baba Ramdev's camp in New Delhi, the Supreme Court today rapped the State and the Delhi Police on its knuckles in what it termed as a case of "police excess". The court also held the yoga guru guilty of negligence.

Coming down heavily on the State and Delhi Police, the Supreme Court today ordered prosecution of police personnel involved in the midnight crackdown on yoga guru Ramdev and his supporters in June last year, saying it was a strike at the foundation of democracy.

Home Minister P Chidambaram, whose resignation is being sought by a belligerent BJP, faces new heat. The amicus curiae appointed by the Supreme Court has found that Mr Chidambaram, as Home Minister, was responsible for the violent crackdown by the Delhi police on Baba Ramdev's camp in Delhi in June this year.

The Supreme Court today asked the Delhi Police to explain the use of force on the followers of Baba Ramdev at the Ramlila grounds on June 4 when the yoga guru was on fast against corruption.
