Train service resumes over century-old Pamban Rail Bridge

Normal train service between Mandapam and Rameswaram resumed today after seven days with railway officials finding the Pamban Rail Bridge, part of which was damaged when a barge towing a naval ship which ran aground, drifted and rammed into it, fit following restoration work.

A Chinese crew member of the Panamian flagged Japanese cargo vessel, which hit and destroyed a fishing country craft off Beypore near Kozhikode, was arrested tonight for alleged negligence, police sources said.

A naval barge that collided with the century-old Pamban Rail Bridge near Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu this morning has been removed and taken to sea. However, the tug vessel that it adrift from still remains aground; rescue operations are on.
