The Supreme Court Monday sought responses from the Centre and DGCA on a plea seeking directions to airlines operating domestic and international fights in India to refund full amount collected for tickets due to cancellation of flights in wake of the lockdown and restrictions imposed to contain COVID-19 pandemic.

A day after the Centre stated that air passengers can ask for full refunds for tickets booked during the first phase of lockdown for travel up to May 3, Vistara said it is "reviewing" the order and will comply once the government clarifies some of its aspects.

The Civil Aviation Ministry today said that the passengers who had booked flight tickets during the first phase of lockdown for travel up to May 3 must get a full refund from the airlines without any cancellation charges if they ask for it.

The industry group has also estimated that the airlines are expected to burn $61 billion of their cash reserves in the April-June period.

If a cancellation is made within 24 hours of booking a flight ticket, no charges should be imposed on passengers, the government proposed on Tuesday.
