Jio has installed around 1 lakh telecom towers to expedite its 5G rollout in India, according to the latest DoT data that shows the carrier has more than nearly 5 times more towers than its nearest competitor. As per a Department of Telecom report, for every base station, Jio has three cell sites while Airtel has two.

Reliance Jio has received the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT)’s approval for the acquisition of Reliance Infratel (RITL). The tribunal asked Jio to deposit Rs 3,720 crore in the State Bank of India (SBI) escrow account to complete the acquisition of RCOM's tower and fibre assets.

Vodafone Idea, the country's struggling third telecom player, plans to begin the journey to roll out 5G services, matching rivals Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, but the firm has offered no specific timeline for the launch or coverage of the ultra high-speed internet services.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday issued notices to the Punjab government and the Centre on a plea filed by Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd, seeking action against "miscreants" damaging its telecom infrastsructure and forcibly closing its stores in the state.

Days after reports emerged of Reliance Jio's telecom towers being damaged in Punjab and Haryana allegedly by farmers angry over its perceived role in framing three agricultural laws recently passed by Parliament, the company today said it had moved court seeking government intervention to safeguard its assets and services.

Reliance Jio Infocomm has written to Punjab Chief Minister and Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) seeking their intervention into "incidents of sabotage and vandalism at Jio Network sites" in the state by unknown persons.

The Punjab Police has said it will take action against "those involved in violence under the garb of democratic right to protest", referring to damage of more than 1,500 Reliance Jio towers allegedly by those protesting for repeal of three farm laws.

More than 1,500 of Reliance Jio's 9,000 telecom towers in Punjab have been put out of action, allegedly by farmers protesting against the farm laws, disrupting service in parts of the state. A representative of the telecom company told NDTV that the towers have taken a hit due to physical damage, power disruption or theft of generator.

The process initiated Friday in Mumbai, once admitted by the court, would leave Ambani's Reliance Communications Ltd., or RCom, 270 days to repay debt or liquidate. The company voluntarily took the step after a planned sale of tower, spectrum and fiber assets to older sibling Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. stalled.

The decision will need to go through all requisite statutory and regulatory approvals.
