Retail Onion Prices

To contain rising prices of onion, the Centre will kickstart from Thursday retail sales of the bulb at a subsidised rate of Rs 35 per kg through mobile vans and NCCF retail shops in Delhi-NCR.

The government has bought nearly 71,000 tonnes of onion so far this year for buffer stock, out of the total target of procuring 5 lakh tonnes for price stabilisation and it expects retail prices to ease with the progress of monsoon.

The Centre has taken a proactive approach to address the rising prices of onions by initiating an aggressive retail sale of onions at a subsidised rate of Rs 25 per kilogramme.

Onion prices remained at a high level in the national capital on Monday and were being sold at an average price of Rs 78 per kilogram in the retail market, according to government data.

Onion prices have further risen to Rs 65-80 per kg in the retail market of the national capital on lower supply.

To boost domestic supply and provide relief to consumers from rising onion prices, the Centre on Friday imposed stock limits on both retailers and wholesales with immediate effect till December 31.

The government on Wednesday relaxed import norms till December 15 to facilitate the early shipment of onion to boost the domestic supply and check the retail prices of the key kitchen staple.

The government has so far imported 12,000 tonnes of onion and it is being offered to states at Rs 49-58 per kg for retail distribution and to check prices, Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said on Tuesday.
