Torrential rains pounded the tiny Himalayan state of Sikkim and the tea growing region of North Bengal, causing landslides which cut off National Highway-10, the main road linking Gangtok with the rest of the country.

Normal life was thrown out of gear in Sikkim on Wednesday as torrential rain caused landslides at several places, blocking the National Highway-10 and snapping the arterial road link with neighbouring West Bengal, officials said.

Normal life remained disrupted in Darjeeling hills and its foothills following heavy rains since last Tuesday which caused landslides at some places, snapping direct road link between Siliguri, Mirik and Dooars and damaging stretches along NH-10.

Incessant rains in Darjeeling hills have caused landslides in Darjeeling and Mirik, damaging vast stretches of National Highway 10 leading to Sikkim.

A fresh landslip was today reported at Gayabari, 56 km from Darjeeling today, cutting off the road link between Darjeeling and Mirik which alone had accounted for 21 deaths in yesterday's landslides, an official of West Bengal's Disaster Management Department said.

Land communication between Sikkim's capital Gangtok and its railhead Siliguri was snapped and the toy train service between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling disrupted on Thursday following landslides in West Bengal's Darjeeling district, officials said.
