With a UK court ruling in favour of extradition of fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi, wanted in India on charges of fraud and money laundering in Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam case, Mumbai's Arthur Road jail has kept a special cell ready to lodge him, an official said today.

When the teams of Crime Branch of Thane Police were busy in raids in the call centre scam, its mastermind Sagar Thakkar alias Shaggy was fleeing the country in the early hours of October 5, officials said.

Investigators on Thursday told a local court they have identified transactions worth Rs 25-30 crore in the call centre scam here till now and that it will take a long time for them to arrive at the actual figure given the magnitude of the scandal.

Investigation into the call centre racket in Thane wherein US-based tax payers were allegedly conned by Indian tele-callers posing as tax officers has led Thane Police to suspect involvement of the son of a senior IPS officer from Gujarat.

A lavish lifestyle and everything posh of the kingpin of the multi-crore extortion racket being run from call centres in Mumbai and Ahmedabad was not restricted to him - Sagar Thakkar alias Shaggy (23) had gifted a Rs 2.5 crore Audi R8 to his 21-year-old girlfriend on her birthday, the Thane police have said.

Nearly 500 employees working at various call centres in Thane, near Mumbai, were detained by the police for allegedly threatening and extorting money from US citizens. The raids were conducted late last night and continued till the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Ten auditors of private firms have been arrested in connection with the alleged over Rs. 350 crore road scam in the city, said police.
