The Defence Ministry on Friday approved Indian Navy's proposal to acquire 10 Kamov-31 choppers from Russia at a cost of around Rs 3,600 crore to strengthen its capability against aerial threats to its aircraft carriers and large warships.

Russia and India are holding negotiations for the supply of 48 Russian Mi-17 military transport helicopters with Moscow hoping to seal the deal by the year end, a top Russian official has said.

The delivery of Kamov military helicopters to India will begin within two years of the signing of the contract, according to a top Russian official who indicated that the number of choppers to be supplied could be increased to more than 200 in the future.

An Indo-Russian joint venture to produce the Kamov military helicopters under a USD 1 billion deal has been registered in India and efforts are on to co-produce them, a senior official of the Russian defence major Rostec has said.

Russia has handed over to India the final batch of three Mi-17V-5 military transport helicopters under a previously signed contract even as it gets ready to ink yet another deal for another 48 such choppers.

India has signed an agreement with Russia to build Kamov 226 Light Utility helicopters - the first project for a major defence platform under the government's 'Make in India' mission. But it was the only one of an expected clutch of defence projects that was successfully concluded during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day visit to Moscow.

India and Russia today signed 16 agreements -- including the manufacturing of nuclear reactors, solar energy plants, railways and the first partnership in defence manufacturing -- during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day visit to Russia.
