Australia faces a "persistent threat" from state-backed hackers, the country's signals intelligence agency said Wednesday, highlighting the particular danger of Russian and Chinese cyberattacks on critical infrastructure.

Microsoft has alleged that Russian spies have targeted Ukraine's allies in 48 countries including UK since Russia invaded the country on February 24. The state-backed Russian hackers have engaged in “strategic espionage” against governments, think tanks, businesses and aid groups, said Microsoft.

Germany's BSI federal cyber agency said it had no evidence to back media reports that Russian hackers used Kaspersky antivirus software to spy on US authorities.

Israeli intelligence officials spying on Russian government hackers found they were using Kaspersky Lab antivirus software.

Kaspersky Labs declined to say if it believed Russia was behind the espionage campaign.
