Sailors Held Hostage

Eleven sailors mostly from Asia held hostage for almost four years by Somali pirates have been freed and are safe on their way to Kenya, mediators who helped secure their release said yesterday.

The government today assured protesting family members of 17 sailors, who are being held hostage by Somali pirates for the past nine months, that it would continue its efforts to ensure their release.

The plight of 43 Indian sailors held hostage by Somali pirates on six ships reached the government's doorstep again today. The families of 17 sailors trapped on one such vessel - MT Royal Grace - gathered in Delhi in a desperate bid to get a hearing from officials.
