Samajwadi Family Tussle

Shivpal Yadav, recently deposed as the Samajwadi Party's Uttar Pradesh chief in a bitter power tussle with his nephew and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, has said he will contest next month's assembly elections in the state.

The bitter dispute over control within the first family of Samajwadi Party sees no end in sight as the Election Commission today reserved its order on allotting the party's symbol, which has been claimed by both party supremo Mulayam Yadav and son and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

Mulayam Singh Yadav's assertion that his "family and party stand united", is being tested less than 24 hours later, with brother Shivpal Yadav announcing that an Uttar Pradesh minister has been sacked from the Samajwadi Party.

The Congress today took a jibe at the ongoing tussle in the "Samajwadi pariwar", saying that despite giving full attention to the "law and order of the family, instead of the state", things (in the family) have gone out of hands.

Despite the Samajwadi Party denying reports of a 'rift' in the family, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has asserted that the people of Uttar Pradesh are having to pay the price for it. The BJP went on to say that there is an "open civil war" within the state government.
