Same Clan Marriage

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar today backed the state's self-appointed village courts, Khap panchayats, on their stand that marriages between people of same Gotra- which refers to a clan or a descendant from a common ancestor - should not happen.

A khap leader from western Uttar Pradesh warned the top court not to interfere in these matters and said that it should not encourage marriages within the same clan.

A panchayat in Bhiwani in Haryana has annulled a marriage between a boy and girl of the same clan. The meeting was headed by former Haryana Chief Minister Hukam Singh.
