The heir and de facto leader of Samsung group received a presidential pardon today, the latest example of South Korea's long tradition of freeing business leaders convicted of corruption on economic grounds.

South Korea's top court on Thursday ordered a new trial for Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong, who was convicted of offences including bribery and embezzlement in connection with the scandal that brought down former president Park Geun-hye.

Lee Jae-Yong is accused of paying nearly $40 million in bribes to a confidante of President Park's to secure policy favours.

A Seoul court on Thursday refused to issue an arrest warrant for Samsung heir Lee Jae-Yong, who had been wanted over his alleged role in a corruption scandal engulfing President Park Geun-Hye.

Samsung's heir apparent today bowed in apology for one of the group's flagship hospitals becoming an epicentre of the MERS outbreak as South Korea reported three new cases, but no additional deaths.
